Natural Resources And Environmental Law And Policies For Sustainable Development In Nigeria

Environmental and natural resource concerns rank highly in both continental and national priorities in Africa. This is because of its ecological and political history, its exceptional diversity of species and ecosystems and its current economic and social situation African countries have suffered excessive exploitation of natural resources. Although the former colonial authorities promulgated some norms both at the regional and domestic levels in order to reduce the destruction of nature, these norms only addressed specific natural resources sectors and were mostly “use-oriented” and “rule-oriented.” They were more focused on the allocation and exploitation of natural resources than management.
